Job Description:
Boston Globe Media is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and visionary editor to lead the Globe Magazine, the online and print home for some of the Boston Globe’s premier longform journalism. With responsibility for setting the tone, voice, and direction of a much-loved weekly magazine, you will shape content that informs, entertains, and inspires – with a mix of longform features, lifestyle, commentary, and visual storytelling. As editor, you will guide a collaborative team to produce outstanding journalism that connects with current readers, attracts new audiences online, and sets the agenda for conversation in Greater Boston and beyond.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the editorial direction, tone, and content strategy for Globe Magazine, ensuring every issue reflects the quality and priorities of The Boston Globe.
- Develop engaging story ideas and issue themes, commission deeply reported longform features, essays, and first-person perspectives relevant to our diverse readership.
- Oversee, mentor, and inspire a core staff of editors, writers, photographers, and designers, as well as manage relationships with freelance contributors.
- Edit, rewrite, and provide detailed feedback on copy to maintain high standards of originality, journalistic integrity, accuracy, and narrative flair.
- Collaborate effectively with art, photography, and digital teams at the magazine and across the newsroom to enhance the visual and multimedia storytelling of magazine content
- Optimize the digital reach of stories to increase impact and drive audience engagement, as well as attract and retain subscribers.
- Foster diverse perspectives and voices, proactively seeking contributors and viewpoints that reflect and challenge the nuances of contemporary New England life.
- Closely monitor audience engagement data, incorporate insights into editorial planning, and innovate in digital and print storytelling.
- Represent the magazine at community events, Globe programs, and media appearances as a key ambassador for the brand and the organization.
- Manage budgets, set the annual editorial calendar with advertising, and contribute to strategic planning for the magazine’s continued growth and relevance.
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of progressive editorial experience at a major newspaper, magazine, or website, including managing writers and producing complex narrative features, multimedia projects, and/or magazine content.
- Superb command of narrative editing, story structure, line editing, and headline/deck writing for print and online audiences.
- Proven track record of leveraging digital skills and audience analytics to attract and retain audiences.
- Outstanding communication, collaboration, and time-management skills.
- Deep understanding of local and regional issues, culture, and aspirations, and a passion for telling the stories of the region.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusion and belonging.
- Strong news judgment, creative vision, and a drive to develop innovative ideas in print and digital mediums.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
