Job Description:
The B-Side by Boston Globe Media is an award-winning hyper-local weekday newsletter delivering the most engaging and culturally-relevant stories to young Bostonians. The publication informs, connects, and entertains Millennials and Gen-Z audiences Monday through Friday via a daily newsletter and social channels.
The B-Side is seeking a writer who will brainstorm, report, write, and coordinate Greater Boston’s most engaging and relevant local daily newsletter. The ideal candidate is a dynamic creative writer and storyteller deeply ingrained in Boston’s cultural fabric. The candidate will be responsible for creating and executing an editorial plan, alongside the Head of Content, for how to inform, excite, and delight Bostonians through original and contributor content across several platforms. This person will write to fit the publication’s established identity, voice, and tone.
The writer’s primary focus will be producing and managing content for The B-Side’s daily newsletter. They should possess a knack for seeking out the most buzzworthy stories in the community, as well as conducting original reporting. The writer should be able to efficiently and effectively break down and explain local stories and events, and have experience reporting on topics relevant to Millennial and Gen-Z audiences, including categories like food, relationships, culture, and more.
Responsibilities:
- Write Boston’s most essential weekday newsletter by reporting and/or aggregating a lead story, headlines, and things to do content, all while maintaining The B-Side’s established voice and brand
- Pitch story ideas and series (and take assignments with equal enthusiasm)
- Assist in creating B-Side’s editorial calendar and content strategy
- Monitor and report on newsletter engagement trends to steer editorial coverage and potential media partnerships
- Fact-check reported and aggregated newsletter content
- Build out the next day’s newsletter in content management systems (beehiiv and WordPress) while meeting daily deadlines
- Support in the creation of social media content on an as-needed basis. Projects might include filming b-roll, light video editing, editing Instagram Story slides, building posts for IG and TikTok, and monitoring DMs for potential partnership/content relationships
- Publicly represent B-Side’s brand at in-person events and pop-ups (Supper Clubs, Best Day Ever, etc.)
- Liaise, alongside B-Side’s Head of Content, with The Boston Globe and Boston.com newsrooms to curate the most essential reads
- Collaborate with B-Side’s General Manager to develop a native content strategy to promote healthy advertising revenue.
Qualifications:
- 2-4 years of experience in journalism, ideally with a background in reporting, producing newsletters (social media experience if a bonus!)
- Experience producing hyper-local news on tight, daily deadlines
- A curiosity about local media and knowledge about the industry’s trends and emerging publications
- An audience-focused mindset, allowing our readers and followers steer editorial content based on their interests and feedback
- Passionate and connected with the city of Boston, its people, and its institutions
- Motivated to understand and leverage emerging technologies to grow audiences and deliver unique content experiences
- A willingness to work nights, weekends, and other non-traditional hours as news demands
- Entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to make high-level decisions independently

The B-Side is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent of The Boston Globe and Boston.com. The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
The annual salary for this role is $50,000 - $60,000.
