Job Description:

The Senior Multimedia Producer acts as a key contributor in the creation and production of video content for digital, streaming, and social media platforms on Boston Globe Media’s network of platforms. This person will help manage all phases of production from pre-to-post of short-form and long-form video, with a strong emphasis on vertical video formats.This Producer manages story development with reporters and producers and works strategically with the video director to develop projects and essential news stories for video, filmed on-location or in-house.

The producer will be part of a cross-functioning multimedia team that will work with a variety of departments. This innovative visual journalist will be able to produce a wide range of videos, including breaking news, enterprise, and feature stories. They will be expected to assess, execute and iterate on multiple videos a week for Globe platforms. The job requires a self-starter who can multi-task and manage in a fast-paced newsroom with tight deadlines. Top candidates for this position will have a background in video storytelling, an understanding of social media video, while demonstrating advanced shooting, audio and editing skills, and experience with graphics.

The producer is also be expected to help in the production of podcasts, live events, and other new initiatives that require multimedia expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Consistently produce high-quality video journalism using compelling video, photography, and/or audio, which accurately reflects the story, and meets technical standards.
  • Follow newsroom guidelines while operating with a steely and unshakable sense of journalistic ethics.
  • Oversee field and studio production, including shooting, editing, audio recording, scripts, rundowns, lighting, and multi-camera productions.
  • Work with reporters and editors across the newsroom to identify and produce timely video pieces.
  • Create​ ​digital​ video​ using​ ​their own work and the work of others, including wire and web sources.
  • Generate video ideas – pitch, develop, research, and write stories and scripts. Manage production for multiple ongoing projects, on location and in the studio.
  • Partner with the audience engagement and social media teams to produce innovative social and vertical video projects.
  • Work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Follow the company’s best practices for video editing and workflow
  • Uses strong reporting skills to lead and edit short news videos and features, advancing stories visually.
  • Use advanced multimedia, animations, video and audio reporting techniques to tell the story

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborates with staff from across the newsroom in the development of video ideas and projects that respond to evolving audience needs and ways of engaging.
  • Provides creative oversight for assigned projects; communicates ideas, concepts, and project details to the video director.
  • Determine production schedules, ensuring projects are completed on time, and according to agreed-upon artistic and technical standards.
  • Adhere to, and be accountable for, all aspects of approved editorial and production standards as set by the Video Director and Deputy Multimedia Director.
  • Leads and coordinates the activities of host, reporters, story producers and other creative and/or technical personnel throughout the production process.
  • Manage pre-production including storyboarding, script editing, pre-interviewing, securing locations, scheduling, and coordination with multiple newsroom teams.
  • Communicates with video director, editors, production technicians, and talent to convey shoot requirements and performs on-location production responsibilities as needed.
  • Monitor post-production processes, including editing and reviewing via Vimeo process to ensure accurate completion of all creative details.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Digital video, television, streaming, or documentary film production and process.
  • Non-linear video editing and video post-production.
  • Professional Journalistic, documentary storytelling and ethics.
  • Studio production equipment and software, teleprompter, ENPS, lighting.
  • Most up-to-date social media video techniques, formats and best practices
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong news judgment.

Skill In:

  • Keen instincts for visual communication in various formats and sophistication as a storyteller, clearly conveying ideas to multiple stakeholders and teammates.
  • Aspects of video production including pre-production, production and post-production.
  • Managing a slate of multiple video projects simultaneously.
  • Digital video production experience in a newsroom setting.
  • Project management, high organizational skills and attention-to-detail, understanding of various storytelling formats
  • Managing daily production related activities including, scripts, storyboarding, staffing, editing, deliverables and quality control.
  • Managing within a high-pressured, fast-paced environment with significant personal disruption.
  • Handing large number of multiple steps in complex system performed with accuracy and speed with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work effectively

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience producing videos, preferably in a daily news environment.
  • College degree or equivalent is required.
  • A demonstrable ability to write, record, create, edit, and produce multimedia features.
  • Comfortable working on tight deadlines and in high-stress breaking news situations.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple camera setups, including but not limited to Canon C100, C300, and various DSLR cameras.
  • A high level of expertise in Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Ability to work late hours and weekends.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

The hourly rate for this role is $44.46 - $53.84.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
