Job Description:

Boston magazine’s research editor is responsible for vetting all editorial content in our monthly issues, ensuring the quality and accuracy of all stories. This role entails working closely with writers, editors, sources, and legal counsel on complex subjects and tight deadlines. The research editor will also work with a team of interns and freelancers, assigning and reviewing fact checking duties. Each month, the research editor may also contribute to front of book articles, feature packages, and digital stories.

Responsibilities:

  • Quickly analyze a manuscript for factual errors, logical flaws, and significant omissions
  • Efficiently examine a writer’s sources and, where necessary, identify additional documents and/or sources
  • Contact sources to corroborate information as needed
  • Communicate changes and copy suggestions clearly and collaboratively to editors and writers through all stages of production
  • Input fact changes into a Word document or InDesign file, careful not to introduce any copy editing errors
  • Archive fact checking reports on the internal server in an organized, easily accessible manner
  • Train interns on fact-checking policies and processes and oversee assignments
  • Contribute to front of book articles, feature packages, and digital stories as needed

Qualifications:

  • A strong understanding of ethical reporting standards and practices
  • Adept writing, reporting and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of InDesign
  • Diplomatic skills sufficient to be able to work successfully with a range of people in
  • complex situations
  • Ability to effectively juggle multiple deadlines
  • Detail-driven with a sharp eye for mistakes
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The Boston Globe Media office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

The annual salary for this role is $55,000 - $65,000.

This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.
