Vice President (Team Lead), Quant Data Engineering

The Role

The Asset Management Quant Research Engineering team is looking for a Vice President of Data Engineering who wishes to take on the challenge of leading a team building a world-class data environment. We are looking for individuals who bring expertise in data onboarding and quality best practices from top-tier competitor firms, and the drive to achieve excellence in team building, operations, tooling, and automation.

As a Team Leader, in an agile structure, you blend deep financial data domain expertise with a passion for coaching, mentoring, and developing associates. You are deeply committed to improving the value delivered to our customers, establishing or partnering to develop technical standards for your area, and influencing strategic decisions, solution development, and work priorities. You will directly manage a team of data engineers who primarily work within data onboarding and report directly to you. You are dedicated to helping them grow and develop in their technical knowledge area and ensuring alignment on the “how” of their work. You are committed to developing your technical expertise and knowledge to bring the latest thinking to your role and empower others with that knowledge.

As a player/coach, you will spend a percentage of your time as a team member applying your expertise and experience to help advance the work and improve team performance and practices.

The Expertise and Skills You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in either Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Information Systems, Mathematics or Finance related field.
  • 7+ years of data engineering experience, including in senior and team leadership roles, at peer firms utilizing agile methods and modern SDLC processes to deliver quality technological solutions in a transparent, reliable way.
  • 5+ years of Experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and developing people and teams
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and acquiring talent needs
  • Demonstrated experience in resource planning and talent allocation across large organizations
  • Demonstrable mastery of industry best practices in the data lifecycle, including data quality automation and tooling.
  • Deep domain experience with financial datasets including FactSet, Bloomberg, IBES, CompStat, S&P Global, Worldscope, Morningstar, MSCI, Reuters, IDC, Markit, BARRA, Axioma, Northfield, and PORT
  • A proven track record of working with complex data environments and associated technology and analytics infrastructure needed to support these environments. History of successfully leading and managing complex data initiatives or projects. Ability to recognize business risk and surface it to key decision-makers.
  • A servant leader who is focused on promoting a team culture of accountability and continuous improvement and removing drag forces to enable team success.
  • Substantial Investment Management business domain expertise across some combination of research, portfolio management, trading and investment operations.

The Value You Deliver

  • Allocate team members expertise across datasets and manage team member growth and development in partnership with Product Owners & Technology Management
  • Identify current and future skill requirements for team members in partnership with Product Owners
  • Align team members in partnership with product owners across teams to ensure the best utilization of talent while also building learning opportunities and learning day content to develop skills
  • Manage, develop, and empower associates within the team to aid in career growth and enable the delivery of increased value in their teams

Technical Expertise

  • Execute on defined roadmaps, measuring and reporting on progress to leadership
  • Help shape and evolve Team wide best practices and strategies, setting standards ensuring work performed is aligned with established roadmaps
  • Measure performance through established objectives and KPIs to deliver agreed-upon business, technology, and people results
  • Continuously improve and encourage an agile way of working
  • Provide leadership to a team of data engineers in delivering datasets from onboarding through mapping and automated DQ so they can be handed off to the Data Operations team for DQ maintenance and consumed by research teams and production.
  • Provide data stewardship to other team members and to Data Operations as they review datasets for completeness and quality.
  • Design and implement processes and tools for data onboarding and quality, helping to deliver an industry best-practice solution for managing the data lifecycle.
  • Produce stand-alone tools that can be used by other teams to automate data quality and discover faults.

The Team

Asset Management Technology (AMT) provides worldwide technology and support to all the Investment Management, Research, Trading, and Investment Operations functions. This role will be part of our Quantitative Engineering team, which is responsible for architecting, developing, and maintaining systems that support quantitative trading.

The base salary range for this position is $124,000-$262,000 per year.

Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidate’s relevant experience, and other factors.

Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
