Corporate Strategy and Insights Associate

Boston, Massachusetts Finance & Accounting Job ID R14221

Corporate Strategy and Insights Associate, Corporate Strategy Team

Full-Time, Boston

The Opportunity

As a Corporate Strategy and Insights Associate you will work alongside experienced strategy leaders to deliver end-to-end projects and/or workstreams on particularly large projects to answer strategic business questions and develop solutions to complex business problems that cross disciplines and will advance business unit or company goals

The Team

  • MassMutual’s Corporate Strategy team ideates, debates, and creates to shape the long-term trajectory of MassMutual through substantive strategy projects for senior leaders, including the CEO, Board of Directors, and Executive Leadership Team
  • Strategy projects leverage and require external analysis (e.g., via a “widened aperture of inquiry” and an insatiable curiosity that includes bringing outside-in perspectives and looking around corners for unlikely opportunities and risks), internal analysis (e.g., empowering the organization to think and act differently while staying grounded in data and the end customer), and the evaluation and articulation of the most impactful decision choices for our clients and the company (e.g., making it easy for the enterprise to seek and act upon the recommendations we deliver)
  • The Corporate Strategy team is composed of high-performing professionals with a mix of top-tier financial services and management consulting experience
  • The Corporate Strategy team consists of the Core Strategy, Consumer & Market Insights, and Strategic Planning & Delivery functions; this role will sit within the Core Strategy team, report to the Strategy Lead, and work closely with the Head of Corporate Strategy
  • The team is strongly aligned with MassMutual’s core values: focus on the customer, act with integrity, value people, work collaboratively, achieve results

The Impact:

  • Lead substantive strategic problem-solving efforts for senior audiences – generate project hypotheses, lead underlying research and analysis, collaborate with clients, test findings, and develop high-impact deliverables
  • Role model behaviors – high-energy, self-driven, strong interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, highest level of professionalism
  • Positively impact the company’s “course and speed” – work as part of a broader, integrated team of MassMutual’s Core Strategy, Consumer & Market Insights, Strategic Planning & Delivery, and Corporate Development teams to drive insights and impact in the collective pursuit of advancing the company’s corporate agenda
  • Help build the team – serve as informal mentor/buddy to junior team members as part of our early career rotational program (iMMerse), support recruiting and training efforts, and take responsibility for continually improving team performance and shaping team culture

The Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of proven experience, preferably in management consulting or corporate strategy with a strong track record of successful delivery
  • Bachelor’s degree is required

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Financial services knowledge and experience is helpful but not required
  • Leadership ability: ability to work collaboratively in a team as well as cross-functionally to create an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization
  • Structured and logical thinking: ability to quickly break down problems in a structured manner, analyze complex data, prioritize analyses, and quickly discern what is most important to draw out insights and implications
  • Analytical aptitude: ability to analyze complex financial and industry data and draw out insights and implications that demonstrate “next level thinking” which go beyond surface-level observations
  • Powerful communication: ability to create simple, powerful, and data-driven communications and effectively use creative storytelling to influence senior leaders and help their decision-making

What to Expect as Part of MassMutual and the Team

  • Exposure to senior leaders across the company, including the CEO and Executive Leadership Team
  • Opportunities to advise senior leaders across the company on the most pressing and strategically important topics
  • A close-knit team of colleagues who get together for regular happy hours and team building events (e.g., baseball games, harbor cruises, “escape rooms,” to name a few)
  • The best aspects of external consulting (e.g., opportunity for strategic impact, exposure to senior executives, coaching, team leadership, and professional growth) while minimizing the downsides (e.g., potential misalignment of incentives, travel, non-strategic projects)
  • Access to mentorship and professional development opportunities and the ability to serve as an informal mentor/buddy to junior team members
  • Networking opportunities including access to Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, African American, women, LGBTQ, veteran and disability-focused Business Resource Groups
  • Access to learning content on Degreed and other informational platforms to support your ongoing learning and development
